Ionic Bonds Defenition - An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more valence electrons and therefore possesses a charge. Ionic bonds, which are relatively weak, are formed by the electromagnetic attraction of opposite-charged ions.

Ionic Bonds Example

Remember that we said earlier that most atoms are electrically neutral. That is, the number of positive charges equals the number of negative charges. As a result, the electrons of an atom stay with it because they are attracted by the positive charges of the protons in the nucleus.

However, sometimes this attraction can be overcome. One or more electrons can be stolen away from the valence energy level of an atom. Or an atom can gain one or more electrons. Atoms that have lost or gained electrons and are therefore positively or negatively charged are called ions. (Source: Avila, Vernon L.
