Unity and diversity - The concept of unity and diversity is based on the observation that all living things share many characteristics, while at the same time expressing those characteristics in a wide variety of life forms.

All life forms share many characteristics, some of which we discussed earlier. Biologists refer to these common characteristics as the unity among living things. Even if it is difficult to see how a giraffe and a one-celled animal like a Paramecium are alike, nonetheless they are. Similarities between species exist at molecular, cellular, physiological, and anatomical levels. With very few exceptions, all living things are composed of cells, the fundamental units of life, and it is at the cellular level that the unity among living things is most notable. For example, the genetic material, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), with few exceptions, is universal among organisms, as is the role of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as a mechanism for energy transfer in cells.
Living things are united because of their common chemical, structural, and physiological characteristics. On the other hand, literally thousands of different patterns of life forms have evolved on this planet. Biologists combine these two facts in the concept of unity and diversity
