The Biological Basis of Behavior

Posted by Biology SMART

Biologists are determining that behavior has a biological basis. The characteristic of stimulus-response falls under the principle of the biological basis of behavior.

Living things behave that is, they act in any number of ways. They respond to stimuli. Simple unlearned reflexes, such as the sucking reflex of a baby or the pecking of a gull chick at its father's beak for food, are based directly on the organism's heredity. Plants also have simple behavior in response to their environment. Roots grow toward gravity, and leaves grow toward the sun. More complex behavior, such as learned behavior, also has a biological basis, and so does the behavior of organisms in groups or societies
