Genetic Continuity Defenition - The concept of the genetic continuity of life states that all living things reproduce offspring of their own kind and that reproductive variations are one way to assure continuation of the species.

The life characteristics of reproduction and variation join in the concept of the genetic continuity of life. All species perpetuate their kind, resulting in the continuation of life on earth. In biology, however, reproduction includes more than just birth. Living things reproduce at the subcellular level (when cell parts produce cell parts), at the cellular level (when cells produce cells for growth and repair), and at the level of the entire organism.
One way to look at life is to think of the individual of a species as nothing more than a disposable container of genetic material (DNA) In this scheme of things, the individual's sole purpose is to maintain and incubate this genetic material, which, through reproduction and genetic recombination, allows for variation and for continuation of the species. The container (the individual) is disposable and can be thrown away, but the contents (DNA) must be perpetuated through the individual's offspring. The individual body dies, but the species continues, and the genetic information lives on.
